How to Make a Hotel Reservation

If you’re a world class traveler who frequently trots around the globe you’re probably pretty familiar with the process of making hotel reservations. In the event you travel infrequently; however, or this is your first time to make hotel reservations for an upcoming trip there are a few tips you should keep in mind to make sure you find the right hotel for you.

Keep in mind there are a few more steps involved in making a hotel reservation than simply booking the room online if you want to make sure you do not spend more than you can afford on the hotel and ensure you find a hotel that will meet all of your needs.

Due to the fact that hotel reservations account for one of the largest portions of many travel trips it is important to understand that hotel room rates can and do vary. Depending on when and how you book a hotel room you could very well pay one price for the exact same room one day and an entirely different price on another day. Factors that can influence the price of the hotel room include the day of the week, season, local events, occupancy rate of the hotel at the time and the method you use for booking the room.

Most hotel rooms have a published rate or “rack” rate. This is typically the highest rate the hotel will charge for a room. Without going through any discount channels and without understanding the factors that can influence a room rate in order to negotiate a better deal this is the rate you’ll pay. The good news; however, is that there is no need to pay this higher rate. Knowledge is power. With that knowledge you can negotiate a better rate for your reservation.

It is important to remember that not all rooms are created equal. Some rooms are larger and some have more amenities or better views. In addition, some have better location within the hotel itself. For example, a room on an upper floor is likely to have less noise. This can also play a role in the price you pay for the room

It is also important for you to decide up front what kind of hotel interests you before attempting to make reservations. There are many options available including chain, mid-price, budget, luxury, etc. You can also decide between three-star, four-star, five-star, etc.

In addition, regardless of city location you will need to give some thought to the type of location that best suits your needs. This might include near a specific attraction, airport or even the center of the city.

After you have decided what kind of hotel you want and where you want to stay it is time to begin shopping around for prices. Be sure not to take the first offer made to you. After all; how will you know whether it’s a good deal or not if you don’t compare. Always try to find a better price than the last one until you have at least three good quotes. If you’re not sure exactly how much you’re saving off the rack rate, call the hotel directly and find out what their rate is. You can then compare the offers you have received to the rack rate and know for sure how much you’re saving.

Finally, always be sure to ask about the cancellation policy just in case you need to use it. Be sure to write down your reservation number so you can cancel if need be or to simply confirm your reservation later. It’s a good idea to have this information emailed to you whenever possible.
